Inbound sales: selling to people who came to you
updated 17 October 2026
Inbound sales is selling to people who reached out first: they found your site through search, read your content, were referred, or asked for a demo. The sales team's job is to respond quickly, understand the need and guide the buyer to a decision, rather than to create interest from scratch.

Why it matters for B2B teams
Inbound buyers are usually further along than outbound contacts. They've noticed a problem and started looking. That makes inbound leads cheaper to close, but only if someone responds while the interest is fresh.
A typical inbound process:
- Capture. A form, a chat, a demo request or a trial signup.
- Route. Send the lead to the right rep quickly.
- Qualify. Confirm fit and need in the first conversation.
- Advise. Answer their questions and recommend a path.
- Close. Agree terms, or hand back to marketing if the timing is wrong.
Speed is the part teams most often fail. A buyer who asked for a demo on Monday and heard back on Thursday has often booked one with someone else.
How it shows up in public posts
Some of the warmest inbound requests never reach your website. People ask in a community instead, and whoever replies well gets the conversation. Treat those posts as inbound with a different front door. Sample sentences, scored 0 to 100 for buying intent the way HearBuyers scores posts:
- Sample, score 95. "I need an MVP built urgently and have a budget of about $5,000. Looking for a React Native developer to help me launch quickly." An inbound request, posted in public.
- Sample, score 60. "How much does a simple MVP usually cost?" Research before a request.
- Sample, score 2. "Developer here, taking on MVP projects this month." A seller.

Common mistakes
- Slow response. The first good reply often wins. Set a response-time target and measure it.
- Treating every inbound lead the same. A newsletter signup and a demo request need different follow-ups.
- Only counting your website. Requests in public threads are inbound demand you can respond to.
- Over-qualifying ready buyers. If someone says they're ready to buy, help them buy.
