Solution selling: sell the fix, not the feature list

updated 17 October 2026

Solution selling is a sales approach where the seller starts from the buyer's problem and sells a solution to it, often a combination of product, service and setup, rather than leading with a product's features. The buyer is buying an outcome; the product is how they get it.

The approach became widely known in B2B through the *Solution Selling* book by Michael Bosworth in the 1990s, and many later methods build on it.

Inside a repair garage, a figure ignores a tray of shiny spare parts and instead fits a custom patch onto a leaking pipe.

Why it matters for B2B teams

Feature-led selling assumes the buyer already knows which features they need. Many don't. They know the problem: reports are late, onboarding takes too long, a tool keeps breaking. Solution selling meets them there.

A typical solution sale follows these steps:

  1. Find the pain. Learn the problem in the buyer's words.
  2. Diagnose. Understand causes, cost and who else is affected.
  3. Build a vision. Describe what "fixed" looks like for them.
  4. Match the solution. Show how your product, plus any service, gets them there.
  5. Prove value. Tie the fix to numbers the buyer cares about.

It overlaps heavily with consultative selling. The difference is emphasis: consultative selling stresses the adviser relationship, solution selling stresses packaging the fix.

How it shows up in public posts

Buyers describe the problem, not the product, when they ask for help in public. That's the opening solution selling needs. Sample sentences, scored 0 to 100 for buying intent the way HearBuyers scores posts:

  • Sample, score 89. "Our support team spends hours each week copying tickets into a spreadsheet so the product team can see trends. There has to be a better way." The problem, its cost and an implied request.
  • Sample, score 64. "Is anyone else's support data impossible to analyse?" Shared pain, no request yet.
  • Sample, score 3. "Our new support dashboard feature just shipped!" A vendor announcement.

A solution-selling reply to the first post would describe the fix (tickets tagged and summarised automatically) before naming any product.

Common mistakes

  • Diagnosing in your own vocabulary. Use the buyer's words back to them.
  • Overbuilding the solution. A bigger bundle isn't a better fix. Solve the stated problem first.
  • Skipping proof. A vision without evidence is a promise. Show how similar teams got there, honestly.
  • Forgetting the decision process. Pair it with a framework like MEDDIC for complex deals.
