Dark social: what it means for B2B teams
updated 18 October 2026
Dark social is sharing that happens in private channels, such as direct messages, group chats, email and closed communities, where your analytics can't see who sent a link or why. A visit with no referrer often belongs here, and most of it gets filed as "direct traffic".

Why it matters for B2B teams
B2B buying runs on trust, and trust travels through private messages. A founder asks a peer which tool they use, and the answer comes back in a DM. A team lead pastes a link into a company chat. None of that shows up in a report, so in your CRM the channel that sourced the deal looks like "direct" or "word of mouth".
In practice, your lead source data undercounts everything that happens in private. A better tracking script won't fix that, because the sharing itself is invisible. You can ask new customers how they heard about you, in their own words, and you can watch the public places where the same conversations leave traces.
How it shows up in public posts
Dark social is private by definition, so a tool that reads public posts can't see it. You see the edges instead: people saying a private conversation happened, or asking in public because they couldn't get an answer in private. The sample sentences below are scored the way HearBuyers scores posts, from 0 to 100 for buying intent.
- Sample, score 78. "Three people DM'd me asking which scheduling tool we use. Writing it up here so I stop repeating myself." A recommendation has been moving in private, and the author is about to make it public.
- Sample, score 58. "A friend sent me a link to some invoicing tool in a group chat. Anyone here actually use it?" The interest started in private, and now the person wants proof in public.
- Sample, score 9. "Check your DMs, I sent you the link." This is a seller talking. Nobody here needs anything.
The first is a cue to publish a useful answer. The second is someone ready to hear from a person who has used the product. The third is noise.
Common mistakes
- Reading "direct" traffic as brand strength. Direct is a catch-all. Some of it is typed URLs, but a lot of it is private shares.
- Trying to track the untrackable. More link parameters won't tell you what was said in a chat. A "how did you hear about us" field on signup is less elegant, and more honest.
- Assuming public listening covers it. Watching public posts shows you the conversations people have in the open. It tells you nothing about what stays in group chats.
- Chasing the DMs. If someone mentions a private share in public, reply to the public post. Don't go looking for the private thread.
