Social listening: hearing what your market says in public
updated 17 October 2026
Social listening means tracking public conversations on social platforms and forums and acting on what you learn: what people need, what they think of you and your competitors, and what problems they're trying to solve. Counting mentions is only the start. The point is understanding them.

Social listening vs social monitoring
People often use the two terms as synonyms, but the split is useful:
- Social monitoring watches for specific mentions and responds to them: someone tagged your brand, someone complained, someone asked support a question.
- Social listening looks across many conversations for patterns and opportunities: rising complaints about a competitor, new phrases buyers use, threads where people ask for a tool like yours.
Monitoring answers "what did they say about us?" Listening answers "what does the market need, and who's asking?"
Why it matters for B2B teams
Brand teams use listening to track reputation and campaigns. Product teams mine it for feature ideas. For sales, buyer listening is the most useful kind: finding people who describe a problem you solve, often before they start searching for a vendor.
That changes what you watch. Brand listening watches your name. Buyer listening watches the problem as the buyer phrases it, plus the names of competitors people are leaving.
How it shows up in public posts
Sample sentences, scored 0 to 100 for buying intent the way HearBuyers scores posts:
- Sample, score 91. "We need a way to track when people on Reddit ask for tools like ours. Anything that isn't just keyword alerts?" This is a buyer for a listening tool describing the job.
- Sample, score 49. "Social listening seems expensive for a small team. Is it worth it?" Interested, but still deciding.
- Sample, score 7. "Great thread on social listening trends for 2027." This is content. Nobody here needs anything.
A keyword alert for "social listening" would return all three. A buyer-intent score tells them apart.
Common mistakes
- Listening only for your brand name. Most buyers who need you have never heard of you.
- Drowning in keyword matches. Without a judgment step, alerts fill up with vendors, students and job posts.
- Promising full coverage. No tool reads every conversation on every platform. Ask which sources and communities are covered and how fresh the data is.
- Replying with a pitch. Answer the question first. Replies that only sell get removed or ignored.
