Social selling: helping buyers in public before you sell
updated 17 October 2026
Social selling means using social platforms to find potential buyers, help them in public and start sales conversations with people who already have a need. The seller doesn't send cold messages to a list. They earn attention by being useful where buyers already talk.

Why it matters for B2B teams
Many B2B buyers ask peers before they ask vendors. They post in communities, reply to threads and complain about the tools they have. Social selling meets them there.
Most writing about social selling is about LinkedIn, where reps post and connect with prospects, and tools such as Dripify automate the outreach there (what Dripify costs). The same habits work on X and Reddit, and people there are often more candid. They describe problems in plain language, name the tools they're leaving and ask strangers for recommendations.
A social selling routine usually has four steps:
- Find posts where someone describes a problem you solve.
- Qualify them: is this a buyer, or a student, a vendor or a job post?
- Reply in public with a useful answer, saying who you are.
- Follow up by direct message only if they respond or invite it.
How it shows up in public posts
Sample sentences from X and Reddit, scored 0 to 100 for buying intent the way HearBuyers scores posts:
- Sample, score 90. "Anyone have a good tool for turning customer calls into a weekly summary for the product team? Ours is a manual doc." The job is clear and they're asking for recommendations.
- Sample, score 61. "Taking notes on customer calls is eating my afternoons." There's pain but no ask. A helpful public reply is worth it.
- Sample, score 5. "5 social selling tips every rep needs." This is someone else's content.

Common mistakes
- Posting instead of listening. Publishing content helps, but most deals start with a reply to someone else's question.
- Pitching in the first reply. Answer the question. Mention what you do only when it's relevant, and disclose it.
- Sliding into DMs uninvited. On X and Reddit, a sales DM nobody asked for often ends the conversation.
- Automating the human part. A drafted reply saves time, but a person should read the thread, edit the reply and post it.
