Ideal customer profile (ICP) in marketing and sales

updated 17 October 2026

An ideal customer profile (ICP) describes the kind of company that gets the most value from your product and gives you the most value back. It works at the company level: industry, size, location, the tools they use, and the situation that makes them need you.

In marketing and sales, the ICP sets who you target, which leads score highly, and which deals you walk away from.

In a greenhouse, a horticulturist compares several planting beds and places a marker beside the plot where the plants grow tallest and healthiest.

Why it matters for B2B teams

If everyone is a prospect, nobody is. A clear ICP lets marketing write for one reader. SDRs can build focused lists, and sales can turn down deals that will churn.

A useful ICP includes:

  • Firmographics. Industry, headcount, revenue band, region.
  • Technographics. The tools they already use, especially ones you replace or connect to.
  • Situation. The trigger that creates the need, such as a new hire, a growth spurt or a contract renewal.
  • Disqualifiers. Who you are not for. Teams skip this part more than any other.

An ICP is different from a buyer persona. The ICP describes the company, and the persona describes the people inside it.

How it shows up in public posts

Buyers asking for help in public often describe themselves in ICP terms without meaning to. Here are sample sentences, scored 0 to 100 for buying intent the way HearBuyers scores posts:

  • Sample, score 92. "We're a 25-person accounting firm on QuickBooks, growing fast, and our client onboarding is all email. What do firms our size use?" It has the industry, size, current tool, trigger and a request.
  • Sample, score 74. "Small firm here, any good client portal suggestions?" There's a request, but the profile is thin.
  • Sample, score 20. "Solo bookkeeper, just curious what portals exist." Probably outside an ICP aimed at firms.

Reading posts like these is a quick way to test an ICP. If the people asking for what you sell look nothing like your profile, the profile may be wrong.

Common mistakes

  • Making it too broad. "B2B companies with 10 to 5,000 employees" rules nothing out.
  • Building it from hopes. Base it on your best current customers, not the logos you'd like to have.
  • Ignoring the trigger. Two companies with identical firmographics can be months apart in when they need you.
  • Never revising it. Check the ICP against closed deals every quarter.

To test your ICP against real requests, set up Reddit monitoring for the problem you solve and compare the people asking with the people you target.
