Prospecting: what it means in sales
updated 17 October 2026
Prospecting means finding people or companies who could buy from you and opening a first conversation with them. It comes before qualification: you build a list of possible buyers, reach out, and learn which of them have a real need.

Why it matters for B2B teams
Every pipeline starts with prospecting, whether a founder sends ten messages a week or an SDR team sends hundreds. The message is rarely the hard part. Choosing who to contact is. A list built from firmographics (industry, headcount, funding) tells you who fits your ideal customer profile. It says nothing about whether anyone there needs you this month.
That gives prospecting two habits. Outbound prospecting starts from a list and creates interest. Signal-based prospecting starts from something a person did or said, such as a public post asking for a tool, and responds to interest that already exists.
How it shows up in public posts
People who describe a problem in public do some of your prospecting for you without knowing it. The sample sentences below are scored the way HearBuyers scores posts, from 0 to 100 for buying intent.
- Sample, score 92. "We need a bookkeeper who can clean up last year's books before our CPA deadline in March." It names the service, the job and a deadline.
- Sample, score 55. "Our outbound has been dead since August. How are other agencies finding clients?" The problem is real, but they want tactics, not a vendor.
- Sample, score 6. "Sharing my prospecting template, DM me if you want it." This is a seller fishing for replies.
The first is a prospect worth contacting today. The second deserves a helpful reply. Filter out the third.
Common mistakes
- Treating a list as a pipeline. A thousand names that fit your profile are suspects until something suggests a need.
- Confusing prospects with leads. Teams use the words differently. See lead vs prospect for the usual split.
- Pitching in the first message. In public threads, answer the question first. People notice a sales pitch dressed up as advice.
- Measuring volume only. Messages sent is easy to count. What predicts revenue is the number of conversations started with people who had a problem.
