Lead vs prospect: interest first, fit second

updated 17 October 2026

A lead is a person or company that has shown some interest or could plausibly buy, but hasn't been checked yet. A prospect is a lead that has been qualified: you know they fit your customer profile and have a need, so they're worth active sales effort.

Teams don't all use the words the same way. Some call any target account a prospect from day one. What matters is that your team agrees on one definition and writes it down.

In a garden, a person examines two seedlings: one freshly sprouted, the other already transplanted into a prepared pot.

Why it matters for B2B teams

The words decide who does what. If a lead is treated like a prospect, reps chase people who were never going to buy. If a prospect is treated like a lead, a ready buyer sits in a nurture sequence for weeks. Clear stages also make reporting honest: a thousand leads and ten prospects is a very different month from a thousand prospects.

How it shows up in public posts

A public post can move someone from lead to prospect in one sentence. Sample sentences, scored 0 to 100 for buying intent the way HearBuyers scores posts:

  • Sample, score 94, prospect. "We run a 20-person design studio and need a new project tool before our renewal in November. Must handle client approvals." Fit, need and timing, stated.
  • Sample, score 58, lead. "What do design studios use for project management?" Interest and likely fit; need and timing unconfirmed.
  • Sample, score 6, neither. "Designers, what's your favourite font this year?" Same audience, no buying signal.

Common mistakes

  • Using the words interchangeably in reports. It hides where your funnel leaks.
  • Skipping qualification for stated intent. Even a strong post deserves a quick check that it's not a vendor or a student.
  • Calling a list of names "prospects". Until you know there's a need, they're leads at best.

Paste a post from your market into the buying intent scorer to see whether it reads as a lead or a prospect.
