How buyers phrase requests in public posts

updated 18 October 2026

Buyers ask in plain first-person language, and most requests start the same way. Of the 239 anonymised requests we kept across 19 niches, 189 (79%) open with "I need", 14 with "I want", and only 12 with "looking for". Search for "looking for a ..." alone and you miss most of them.

In a library archive, a researcher pins hundreds of speech bubbles onto a wall and draws threads between recurring shapes.

How we collected it

These phrasings come from the same scans behind where B2B buyers ask for help. Each paraphrases a real public request that a model judged to be someone looking to hire or buy, with names, places, companies and amounts removed. We counted how each one opens by matching its first words.

The openings

OpeningRequestsShare
I need ...18979%
I want ...146%
I am looking for ...125%
Something else2410%

Paraphrasing flattens some openings. Read the split as a rough guide to which words show up, and expect it to miss some of how people really write.

What a strong request includes

The examples that scored highest for buying intent in our scans kept sharing the same ingredients:

  • A defined job. "Clean up our books and coordinate with our CPA" scores higher than "need help with finances".
  • A tool, format or context: the software they use, the kind of business, or the deliverable.
  • A reason to act now, such as a deadline, a departure, a launch or a renewal.
  • A direct question, like "Who do you use?" or "Can anyone recommend...?"

Posts with none of the four are usually general discussion. To see this on a real post, paste it into the buying intent scorer.

Search phrases that catch more requests

"looking for a ...""I need a ...", "I want a ...", "need someone to ..."

"recommend""who do you use", "anyone have a good ..."

The Reddit keyword research tool turns what you sell into phrases like these. The Reddit search builder then writes the searches for you.

Frequently asked questions

Are these real posts?

They're anonymised paraphrases of real public requests. We don't publish the original text or link to the people who posted it.

Why paraphrase them?

To protect the people who wrote them. The privacy policy explains how to ask to be excluded.

Does this hold outside these niches?

We don't know. In these service niches buyers hire an individual or a small team, and software buyers may phrase things differently.
