How to get MSP clients: find people already asking

checked 18 October 2026 · 18 requests found in 100 posts judged

The warmest clients for a managed service provider are people who have already posted that they need IT support. Rather than trying to create demand, look for people who are asking for help, recommendations, or a provider.

In a scan of Reddit posts from the last 12 months and X posts from the last 30 days, checked on 2026-10-18, we judged 100 public posts and found 18 people asking for IT support: 17 on Reddit and 1 on X. Requests showed up most often in r/msp (7), r/sysadmin (2), r/Action1 (1), r/MSSP (1), and r/ColumbiaMD (1).

How they ask for it

Requests from public posts, paraphrased with anything identifying removed. These are samples, not quotes.

95Worth answering

I run a small business with about 50 endpoints and need ongoing help with vulnerability and patch management. I want an MSP that can handle patch failures, user restarts, and remediation tasks through our existing platform. The rest of our environment is already managed, so I am looking for a focused service at a reasonable cost.

Why: Actively seeking an MSP for a defined ongoing support need.

97Worth answering

I am looking for an MSP to help with compliance, data security, and endpoint security for a fully remote healthcare related company. We use a cloud based productivity platform and need a provider that understands regulatory requirements. I would like recommendations and guidance on finding suitable vendors.

Why: Requesting MSP recommendations for compliance and security support.

5Looks like a lead, isn't

I provide IT services and want to connect with business owners who genuinely need ongoing technical support. I am trying to learn where they look for help and which industries are most likely to need services such as networking, security, maintenance, and software setup. I would rather find qualified prospects than do broad outreach.

Why: Seeking customers rather than looking to hire IT support.

What a request worth answering looks like

  • The person sounds urgent and needs help with a problem, outage, migration, security issue, or ongoing support.
  • They give specific details about their environment, company, users, systems, or requirements.
  • They mention costs, budgets, quotes, contracts, or evaluating providers.
  • They ask for recommendations, referrals, or help finding an IT company. Ignore vague complaints and discussions that are not asking for help.
Bar chart of requests by community: r/msp 7, r/sysadmin 2, r/Action1 1, r/MSSP 1, r/ColumbiaMD 1.

How to reply without getting removed

  • Answer the question first and give useful guidance.
  • Say you are a managed service provider when it is relevant.
  • Keep the reply focused on the issue the poster raised.
  • Do not post links unless the person asks for them or the community allows them.
  • Follow each community's rules on self promotion, direct messages, and vendor participation.
17 of 18 requests were on Reddit and 1 on X.

A 20-minute weekly routine

  1. Check communities where people have asked for IT support.
  2. Look for new posts that describe a real business problem or request recommendations.
  3. Reply with practical help and disclose that you are a managed service provider when appropriate.
  4. Track conversations and follow up when someone asks for more information.

MSP lead generation, from public requests

Lead generation for managed service providers usually means buying lists or running outbound. Public requests work the other way round: the buyer writes first. Of the 100 posts we judged, 18 were people asking for IT support, and the most came from r/msp. That is a short, warm list you can answer yourself, and HearBuyers reads for it every day. For outbound and other channels, see lead generation for IT services companies. How these numbers compare with other niches is in where B2B buyers ask for help.
