How to get clients on Reddit: where people ask to hire, and how to answer

updated 1 November 2026

To get clients on Reddit, find the posts where someone has already asked for what you do, answer the question properly, and let your reply and profile show that you do this work. Pitching people who haven't asked rarely works on Reddit and often gets you removed. Those posts exist: across 23 service niches, our scans found 749 public requests to hire or buy, and 721 of them were on Reddit.

This guide covers where those requests appeared for each niche, how to search for them, and how to reply. How we collect and check our numbers is on how we research Reddit.

On a town square stage, a craftsperson responds to raised hands from people in the crowd by offering matching tools from a toolbox, illustrating finding requests and answering them appropriately.

Where people ask to hire, by niche

For each niche we searched Reddit over the last 12 months and X over the last 30 days for the phrases buyers use ("need a bookkeeper", "looking for a video editor"). A model then kept only the real requests. The scans ran between 16 and 26 October 2026. Each niche page lists the communities, the phrasings and two scored examples.

Two patterns stand out. People ask for creative and admin work (video, design, virtual assistance) in hiring communities such as r/forhire. Professional services (financial advice, insurance, bookkeeping) get requested in the community where the buyer's problem lives, such as r/personalfinance or r/Insurance. There, the person often doesn't know yet that they want to hire someone.

These counts cover what our searches found in a fixed window, not all of Reddit. A niche with more requests isn't necessarily easier to win. X was searched over a shorter window, so the Reddit share partly reflects how we collected the data.

How to find the requests

Search for the words a buyer uses, not the words you'd use to describe your service. In the 239 anonymised requests we studied, 79% opened with "I need" and only 5% with "I am looking for" (how buyers phrase requests).

  1. Start with the communities in your niche's row, plus the communities your buyers work in. Read each one's rules first; our subreddit rules lookup summarises them.
  2. Search each community for "need a" plus your service, then for "recommend a", "looking for" and "who do you use". Sort by new so you find requests while they can still be answered. The Reddit search builder writes these searches for you.
  3. Search comments too, not only posts. Many requests are replies under someone else's question.
  4. Check the date. A request from last week is a lead, and one from last year is research.

How to reply so it turns into a client

Answer the question in the post as if you'll never be hired. Then say once, plainly, that you do this work, and ask one question that moves things forward. People on Reddit who get clients this way describe it as slow and cumulative: "Think of it as planting seeds, not harvesting," as u/erickrealz put it in r/b2bmarketing (comment).

  • Use the details in the post: their tools, their deadline, what they tried.
  • Reply in the first day or two, while people still read the thread. Later replies mostly go unread.
  • Leave links out unless they ask or the rules allow it. Your profile can say what you do.
  • Don't send cold DMs. Most communities treat unsolicited messages as spam, and people can report you.
  • Pick your threads. "Biggest mistake I see? People responding to every alert instead of picking threads where they genuinely have something useful to add" (u/No_Hedgehog8091 in r/b2bmarketing, comment).

The full method, with a rubric for deciding which posts deserve a reply, is in Reddit lead generation for B2B.

Limits

In most niches the volume is small, a few real requests a week at most. Some communities ban sellers outright; respect that instead of looking for a way around it. Reddit is changing its rules for public data access between October 2026 and March 2027, so tools that read Reddit for you may change as well. Searching by hand will keep working.

Next step

Open your niche's page from the table above, pick the two communities with the most requests, and run the "need a" search in each today. If you'd rather have new requests come to you, HearBuyers watches the communities you choose, scores each post for buying intent and drafts a reply that you edit and post yourself. It's free for 14 days.
